چکیده

8 One of the famous questions in social science is whether money makes people happy. We offer new 9 evidence by using longitudinal data on a random sample of Britons who receive medium-sized lottery wins 10 of between £1000 and £120,000 (that is, up to approximately US$ 200,000). When compared to two control 11 groups – one with no wins and the other with small wins – these individuals go on eventually to exhibit 12 significantly better psychological health. Two years after a lottery win, the average measured improvement 13 in mental wellbeing is 1.4 GHQ points. 14 © 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V. 15 JEL classification: D1; I3 16

This note investigates whether gains from lottery wins are strictly randomized across lottery winners. Using a unique longitudinal dataset of lottery winners in Britain, we offer new evidence that certain socio-economic characteristics strongly predict future winnings in the national lottery. DO YOU HAVE TO WIN IT TO FIX IT? A Longitudinal Study of Lottery Winners and Their Health-Care Demand.

We exploit lottery wins to investigate the effects of exogenous changes to individuals' income on the utilization of health care services, and the choice between private and public health care in the United Kingdom. Our empirical strategy focuses on lottery winners in an individual fixed effects framework and hence the variation of winnings arises from within-individual differences in small ver...
